A departing Australia superannuation payment (DASP) is a payment of superannuation that can be made to a temporary resident who has left Australia. To be eligible for a DASP, you must:
- Have worked in Australia on a temporary resident visa
- Have left Australia and do not hold any other active Australian visa
- Not be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or a permanent resident of Australia
You can apply for a DASP from your super fund or from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). If you apply through your super fund, they will need to provide you with a DASP application form. If you apply through the ATO, you will need to complete a DASP application form and provide the ATO with evidence that you meet the eligibility requirements.
The amount of the DASP will be equal to the amount of superannuation that you have accumulated while working in Australia. The DASP will be taxed at a rate of 15%. You will not need to include the DASP in your income tax return.
You can apply for a DASP at any time after you have left Australia. However, if you do not apply for a DASP within 10 years of leaving Australia, your superannuation may be forfeited.
For more information on DASPs, you can visit the Australian Taxation Office website.
Here are some additional details about DASPs:
- DASPs are non-assessable, non-exempt income. This means that they are not included in your taxable income and you do not need to pay income tax on them.
- DASPs are subject to a final DASP withholding tax of 15%. This tax is withheld by your super fund or the ATO when they make the payment to you.
- You cannot claim a deduction for the DASP on your income tax return.
- If you do not apply for a DASP within 10 years of leaving Australia, your superannuation may be forfeited.
